Joy to the World

Remember the adventures you used to go on as a kid? Maybe you got all your friends and you went down to the creek. Maybe once you were at the creek you decide to walk all the way down to the percolation ponds. Some days you would just get on a bus and ride it all day to see where it went. Depending on how you look at it, our lives can be a series of adventures. As adults we don’t think of things as adventures, such as work or getting to work or getting the kids to school or soccer practice. Yet those are all adventures. Of course my new adventure is travel. Blogging at findingkevin.com so that you can travel with me. Memories of travel is what brings me back to Rio, more specifically Barra. I’ve been here for a week and now I’ve become a bit of a regular at the coffee shop and the breakfast place. I’m starting to see the same people walking by, going about their business. They don’t know that they’re on adventures just like I am; meeting friends at the coffee shop where I’m sitting now, walking to the gym or paying bills at the corner kiosk. What has really caught my attention are the people I see riding the bus. It reminds me of when I lived out in the orchards of South San Jose, when friends and I would get on a bus and just ride it all day long. Mom would say be home by dinner and let us go. Some days we would end up on the peninsula, other days we be over in the east bay. We weren’t afraid, we had no cares, it was just what we did, it was our adventure. As adults in our day-to-day lives we forget to think about things as an adventure, we lose the joy of day-to-day living. It’s the same all over the world. It’s not a symptom of being an American but it’s a symptom of being an adult who feels responsible, and in responsibility loses joy. I try hard every day to act with joy in my life and hopefully that joy will spread to others.
